Mary McDonnell
Mary McDonnell is an actress who has
been nominated for two Oscars(r). She is known for her portrayals in characters
in period and contemporary screen roles. Mary Eileen McDonnell was born on
April 28, 1952 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to Eileen (Mundy) and John
McDonnell, a computer consultant Both from Irish origin. Raised in Ithaca, New
York, she graduated from the State University of New York (SUNY) in Fredonia.
Later, she attended the drama school and was accepted to the Long Wharf Theatre
Company in East Coast. Her first film role came in Dances with Wolves (1990) by
Kevin Costner. She played the character "Stands with a Fist", a Sioux
Indian-raised white woman. McDonnell received her first Academy Award
nomination for the character. McDonnell has appeared in the Lawrence Kasdan
films Grand Canyon (1991), and Mumford (1999) with such veteran performers as
Robert Redford as well as Sidney Poitier. She also played in Roland Emmerich's
Independence Day (1996), which starred Will Smith. Margin Call (2011) which was
directed by Kevin Spacey, earned McDonnell the Robert Altman award at the 2012
Independent Spirit Awards. McDonnell was President Laura Roslin in the
critically well-reviewed series Battlestar Galactica (2004) on Syfy. McDonnell
was a star for four seasons. McDonnell was awarded an Emmy nomination for her
frequent guest role in the TV show ER (1994). The popular drama series on TNT
Major Crimes (2012) features her as Captain Sharon Raydor. This is the sequel
to The Closer (2005) in which McDonnell created the role. She was nominated for
the Primetime Emmy(r). The character she played as a paraplegic star of soap
opera in John Sayles' critically acclaimed film Passion Fish (1992) earned her
an Best Actress Academy Award (r) nomination as well as an Academy Award
nomination. Golden Globe nod.
